What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are another esthetic fix for a missing tooth and perhaps mimic most what it is like to still have a natural tooth in the mouth - in that it stands alone and does not involve adjacent teeth. After the oral surgeon surgically places the implant screw in the bone where the gap is, 2-3 months are allowed for healing and osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process by which your natural bone grows between the threads of the implant, anchoring it in your jaw much like your teeth are.  After this phase, we are then able to place a crown on top of the implant screw, filling the gap and making the implant functional. Just as with the dental bridge, implants are an aesthetic, permanent way to fill the gap between two teeth, and with proper home care can last 10-20 years or more.
