Do you notice any of the following in your child?
- Early signs of tooth crowding or a misaligned bite
- A tendency to breathe through their mouth than their nose
- Dark circles under their eyes or a constant look of fatigue
- Restlessness or an inability to stay focused during the day
- Poor posture with their head positioned forward
If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, it could be a sign of an underlying issue that, if not addressed early, could lead to more significant problems in adulthood.
Every part of our body plays a significant role in our ability to function, and our mouths are no different. Crowded teeth, a narrow palate, and crossbites are not only a cosmetic problem, but they make breathing much more difficult. The body tries to find ways to compensate for this, but these just lead to more crowding and narrowing, jaw problems, enlarged tonsils, unhealthy posture, and even sleep apnea.
What Causes Crowding?
Crowding occurs when the upper arch, called the palate, is under-developed, so the teeth do not have enough room to come in straight. This can be due to genetics, the position of the tongue during growth and development, or other habits such as thumb/pacifier sucking, tongue thrust, and reverse swallowing.
As a consequence, the teeth come in crowded and misaligned. The future implications of this are a crowded dentition that gets progressively harder to fix; grinding and clenching that can lead to significant TMJ problems and worn down teeth; mouth breathing as opposed to nasal breathing; sleep apnea; and neck, hip, and back problems.
What results can I expect with Myobrace treatment?
Myobrace is an easy and natural way to help properly develop the arches early on to give the teeth the room they need to come in straight, preventing the need for extensive ortho later on and avoiding the life-long health issues that accompany narrow arches and a crowded dentition. In addition to physical improvement, Myobrace also aims to accomplish the following:
- Improve nasal breathing.
- Improve lip seal
- Train the tongue to sit on the roof of the mouth, where it belongs
- Improve swallowing
Myobrace does not only provide a cosmetic solution to crowding, but the ultimate goals of Myobrace are to improve quality of life and eliminate the destructive habits that usually cause orthodontic relapse.
How does Myobrace work?
Myobrace operates on the principle that developing the arch early on and making sure it achieves an adequate width will prevent crowding and narrow arch problems in the future, ultimately preventing the need for braces.
Myobrace treatment is a multidisciplinary approach. In addition to wearing the device for 1-2 hours during the day and throughout the night, we also teach you and your child exercises to be done for just minutes a day and provide myofunctional training to help the process along. We carefully monitor progress and adjust treatment accordingly.
What is the time frame for Myobrace treatment?
Myobrace treatment can take anywhere from 1.5 to 2 years. This largely depends on the patient's compliance in wearing the device and doing the exercises daily.
